When it comes to maintaining focus, many distractions get in the way and keep you from achieving your goals. Whether it be the constant dialogue running through your mind or the notifications going off on your phone, concentrating for any period can be quite challenging.

Simply knowing that you have things to accomplish may not be enough to keep your mind focused on the task at hand. Incorporating these four tips to help you focus on the most important tasks you need to accomplish.

1. Set Goals. For most people, setting goals is done at new year, or whenever they get an urge. For others, setting goals is a necessary part of their everyday life. Whichever it is for you, you should know that setting goals can help you maintain your focus. Creating goals with actionable steps will guide you through a difficult task while keeping you focused on the results.

2. Create a To-Do List. Once you have set goals for yourself, breaking down to tasks and creating a to-do list will help keep you on track. A to-do list allows you to take manageable steps towards your goals that you can then check off as you go. Creating small wins throughout the day helps keep you focused and motivated to continue forward.

3. Focus on Complex Tasks First. Most people are more focused during the morning hours after a restful sleep, having a rested brain and body. Other people function best later in the day or night. Schedule more complex tasks for the time of the day that works best for you. Your brain tends to have more capacity for solving more challenging problems when it is more alert than at any other time of the day. This will help you to maintain focus and get things done.

4. Brain Breaks. It is important to schedule breaks throughout the day for your brain to relax and recharge. Some people attempt to charge straight through because they feel they have so much to do. However, doing this when your brain has been at work for a while can wreak havoc on your focus. Taking a few minutes to break can give you the necessary time to revive your brain. Try the Pomodoro Technique — 25 minutes focus then 5 minutes rest

. . .

Overall, many things are continually vying for your attention throughout the day.

Having a few tips that you can use will make the difference between feeling frustrated and feeling successful at completing your goals.

Taking a few minutes at the beginning of your day to set your priorities can help you to home in on the most important things, at least for that day.
